Axel, an Indian Army canine known for his exceptional sniffing abilities, tragically lost his life during an anti-terrorism operation in the Baramulla region of Jammu and Kashmir last month. The brave dog will be posthumously recognized with a ‘Mention-in-Despatches’ in this year’s bravery honors, announced just a few days before India’s 76th Independence Day celebrations.
Axel has recently been recognized for his outstanding and honorable service, receiving a ‘Mention-in-Despatches’ award, which is considered to be more prestigious than other commendation cards awarded to canines like the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. This award is a testament to his bravery during a counter-insurgency operation, making him one of only 42 dogs to receive this honor. Sadly, Axel lost his life while serving with the 26 Army Dog Unit at the young age of two years old. He had joined the unit in December of the previous year, as per reports.
As per reports, Axel had assisted in a mission against terrorism alongside the 29 Rashtriya Rifles. Bajaj, his faithful furry partner, had thoroughly scoured the building before Axel was sent in to search for any remaining threat. With precision, Axel inspected the first room and proceeded to the second one. However, a terrorist with a lack of courage unleashed gunfire on him without any regard. Despite being gravely injured, Axel marched forward for 15 seconds before he eventually passed away, as noted by the army’s official statement.
After the gunfight ended, army soldiers retrieved the body of a canine named Axel who had sustained several injuries and a fractured femur. Additionally, Axel’s companion Bajaj has received recognition from the COAS.
As per the report by WION, the operation in Baramulla continued for a duration of eight hours and culminated in the killing of a terrorist named Akhtar Hussain Bhatt, who hailed from Kupwara. He was revealed to be associated with the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed organization.
